At Ibn Haldun University, we believe a university education is more than preparation for a single profession. Our mission is to prepare students not only for successful careers but also for life as thoughtful, engaged, and globally minded citizens.

That is why Ibn Haldun University is one of the very few institutions in Türkiye to offer a liberal arts–style core curriculum at the undergraduate level.

A Foundation for Life and Learning

Our University Core Curriculum consists of twelve required courses, taken primarily in the first year and partly in the second. These courses provide students with:

  • A broad understanding of world history and literature
  • A strong foundation in modern Turkish history and literature
  • Essential knowledge in the natural sciences
  • Core skills in quantitative reasoning

By completing these courses, students gain wide intellectual horizons that complement and strengthen their departmental studies from the second year onward.

Structure of the Courses

Each University Core Course follows a distinctive format:

  • Two weekly lectures delivered by leading faculty members, offering students a solid framework of essential knowledge.
  • One discussion session each week, where active learning takes place through dialogue, debate, and collaborative exploration of ideas.

The lectures provide a strong academic foundation, while the discussion sessions encourage students to think critically, test their ideas, and engage with peers in a supportive environment.

The Role of Teaching Fellows

Our discussion sessions are led by selected graduate students—our Teaching Fellows—who are among the best and brightest at IHU. Working in pairs, they guide small groups of 10–13 first-year students, ensuring personalized attention and interactive learning.

Teaching Fellows are responsible for:

  • Reviewing lecture content and assigned readings
  • Leading discussions on special themes and problems
  • Designing, assigning, and grading homework, midterms, and final exams

This dual responsibility makes Teaching Fellows both facilitators of learning and mentors to younger students.

A Unique Opportunity

For our graduate students, serving as a Teaching Fellow is both a serious responsibility and a remarkable opportunity. It provides early in-class teaching experience, strengthens their academic careers, and enhances their future prospects—all while supporting our undergraduates in their most formative years.

At IHU, the Core Curriculum reflects our commitment to cultivating well-rounded, intellectually curious, and socially responsible graduates who are prepared for the challenges of a multicultural world.
